How tax on reselling works

Profit, not sales

You pay tax on your profit: money in minus your costs. Each year you can deduct either your real costs or the £1,000 trading allowance, whichever is bigger. The calculator picks the better one for you. From 6 April 2027 the allowance is due to rise to £3,000.

Income Tax

Your profit is added to any other income, like a salary. In England, Wales and Northern Ireland everyone gets a £12,570 personal allowance, then pays 20% up to £50,270, 40% up to £125,140 and 45% above. Scotland has six bands from 19% to 48%. The personal allowance shrinks by £1 for every £2 of income over £100,000.

National Insurance

Self-employed people pay Class 4 National Insurance of 6% on profits between £12,570 and £50,270, and 2% above. It's worked out on your selling profit alone, so with a typical side hustle you often pay none, even if you have a job. If profits are under £7,105 you can choose to pay voluntary Class 2 contributions (£3.65 a week) to protect your State Pension record.

Payments on account

If your Self Assessment bill is over £1,000 and less than 80% of your total tax was taken through PAYE, HMRC also asks for half of next year's estimated bill in advance, on 31 January and 31 July. That's why first-year bills can be a shock: you may owe the full bill plus 50% in your first January.

What this calculator leaves out

Student loan repayments, savings and dividend income, Marriage Allowance, pension contributions, losses carried forward and Making Tax Digital costs. It's an estimate, not tax advice.
